Brief Description
A non-curricular workshop, in which students get the chance to build a “basha”, filter water and prepare a fire.

The Home Front, 1939-45. Key Stage 3
Brief Description
Utilising the museum’s extensive handling collection and a reconstructed 1940s house, this workshop aims to give students an insight into everyday life on the “Home Front” during WWII. Children get the opportunity to try on gas masks, helmets and uniforms, try out a stirrup pump and experience an “air raid” inside an Anderson Shelter.

Letters Home from the Trenches. Key Stage 3/4, GCSE
Brief Description
A literacy orientated workshop, beginning with a session in the trench to gain an appreciation of the average soldier’s life. Students then complete a Field Service Postcard and/or write a letter describing their experiences. Members of each group act as officers to censor soldier’s mail.

Trench Warfare and the Birth of the Tank. Key Stage 4
Brief Description
This workshop uses the museum’s reconstructed trench and items from the handling collection – uniforms, weapons and equipment – to give students an insight into the nature of trench warfare and the life of the average “Tommy”. Students then pass on to the World War One hall for a session inside a Mark IV tank.

A general introduction to armoured warfare from the First World War to the present.

Brief Description
An exploration of the role of the Army in peace and war, exploring themes such as service, patriotism, comradeship and self-sacrifice.
