Before there was a publicly-funded fire service, property owners could take out fire insurance. In Wareham, properties covered by the Sun insurance company had a sun displayed on their front doors, so that, in the event of a fire, fire crews knew that the property was covered and would tackle the fire. This one is probably later than 1762, when the centre of Wareham was devastated by a fire.
